I learned back in the '50's and 60's that every time I took a flu shot I got the flu ' three times, in fact. Once immediately after the shot, again after 3 months, and a third time after 6 months. Every year, every flu shot, the same pattern repeated. In 1967 I quit taking flu shots and I have caught the flu since then about once every 5-6 years.

In 1968 I played Santa at Christmas for a few close friends and their families. It was a fun thing to do and I sort of fell in the Santa mode around Christmas time many years.

Varicose veins can trigger death. Not true! Although varicose veins can result to other medical conditions like ulcer, it cannot cause death. Since varicose veins are just part of the superficial veins that consist just about 10 percent of the blood found in the legs, it can be removed surgically or otherwise and treated well without causing any harm.

BILBERRY Bilberry, or Vaccinium myrtillus (Latin), is made from a small, blue berry that has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. bilberries have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. Bilberry has traditionally been used to treat diarrhea, varicose veins, mucous membrane inflammation, and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). It has also been shown to be particularly beneficial to the health of the eyes.

Other people have claimed that the only way of treating varicose veins is through surgery. The verdict? Definitely untrue! There are a lot of treatments for varicose veins that have now been made available and not all types of varicose veins that appear on the legs require surgery. Although there is no denying the fact that some types of varicose veins require surgery, you can certainly make good use of other available treatments out there.

How can varicose veins be treated? There are several ways to treat varicose veins, depending on the symptoms and types of veins present: 1. Compression stockings: The conservative management of varicose veins is to wear compression hose, exercise, control your weight, and elevate your legs above your waist as much as possible in order to drain the vein blood out of your legs. Compression hose will assist the vein in pumping blood up the leg and back to the heart. However, this technique will not make the varicose veins go away. Nevertheless, the use of compression hose is very important in not just preventing worsening of varicose veins, but also in preventing recurrent problems after treatment. 2. Sclerotherapy: This technique is used for the treatment of smaller varicose veins, as well as reticular veins and spider veins. A small amount of a medication (sclerosant) is injected directly into the diseased vein. The medication irritates the inner lining of the vein and causes it to seal shut. The newer types of sclerosants are not painful when injected using a very tiny needle, and multiple sites of injection are typically needed. In addition, one usually needs anywhere from 2-6 treatments to obtain 70-80% clearance of the spider veins. The procedure is performed quickly and easily without the need for anesthesia. Sometimes, we use ultrasound guidance for sclerotherapy. The number of treatments required will vary with each individual, depending on the extent of visible varicosities and spider veins. A range of 2-6 treatments can be expected in order to achieve a 70-80% clearance of the spider veins. We also use a Lyra 1064 nm YAG laser to treat stubborn spider veins. 3. Surgical Stripping: In the past, surgical removal or "stripping" of the diseased vein out of the leg was the best treatment we could offer patients with vein problems. This procedure required an operating room, general or spinal anesthesia, and recovery times that varied from 2-6 weeks. Vein stripping is an antiquated procedure and should be very rarely used in the management of varicose veins with the newer techniques that are currently available. 4. Microphlebectomy: This procedure involves the use of several, 1 mm, tiny incisions along the course of the leg veins in order to remove the diseased vein in segments. These tiny incisions heal well with minimal discomfort. Microphlebectomy can be performed by itself or in combination with another type of vein treatment. 5. Endovenous Laser Therapy: The use of lasers in the management of vein problems is replacing the standard surgical approach to treating large varicose veins. With Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) a very thin fiber or catheter is inserted into the diseased vein through a small needle puncture in the leg, requiring only local anesthesia. The laser delivers energy directly to the inner lining of the vein, causing the vein to close. The procedure can be performed in the physician's office in approximately one hour. Patients are usually able to resume their routine activities immediately after the procedure.

What follows works well for me; it may work exactly the same for you, maybe even better. And it may be that my program will only work for you if you make a minor modification; or for another person if you make major modifications.

To go along with these supplements, you need to both live a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, and eat a healthy diet. Improved digestion is likely the very first step to better health and especially if you use or have used antibiotics you need to re-infuse your beneficial body flora and fauna ' those enzymes absolutely essential to good digestion, proper nutritional absorption and good health. One of the best ways to do this is by using an organic greens supplement.

Researching more about varicose veins and how it can be triggered as well as its symptoms and preventive measures is definitely the right way for you to know how to effectively deal with it. Even if you do not have varicose veins just yet, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Will Getting Rid Of Varicose And Spider Veins Hurt My Circulation? The varicose veins that are being treated are not doing their job, and therefore are not missed when they are treated. The body has numerous other veins that are taking blood back towards the heart, and they take over the role of the varicose veins after treatment.

In the 1960's I learned that I have a bad reaction to tetracycline, the wonder drug antibiotic, about the third time it was prescribed, and to 'geocyllin', one of the penicillin family, but not to any of the other family members. It sort of felt like a huge black hole in the middle of my gut with a general feeling of extreme malaise. The Doctors decided this was an allergic reaction as it was repeated exactly several times.

Will Abnormal Veins Come Back After Treatment? After sclerotherapy for spider veins, a small number of patients who have a natural tendency to form spider veins will need yearly treatments or "touch-ups". Larger varicose veins can also recur, especially if one gains weight, or does not wear compression hose. These recurrences are usually not as severe as the initial episode, and can be treated with sclerotherapy or microphlebectomy.

For Christmas of 1996 I determined to begin taking the zinc and selenium daily beginning about mid-November and on thru Christmas. The next time I got sick in any way was for Christmas 2001, when I was running a fever alternating with chills. But'..no one around me could tell I was sick, I didn't have the sniffles or a red nose, nor did I lose my voice. To all outward appearances I looked and acted completely healthy. And while those around me catching this particular flu bug were sick for up to a week, mine lasted only two days and I was over it. Since the 1995 illness, 2001 is the only time I have been sick during the Christmas season, yet I meet thousands of children and adults and must come into contact with every possible contagious germ out there.

What Are The Complications Of Vein Management? Sclerotherapy and EVLT have rarely been associated with any serious complications. Minor complications of these procedures include bruising, mild itching, tingling, tenderness and tightness in the treated leg for up to two weeks after the treatment. Allergic reactions to the sclerosant have been reported, but are extremely rare. Ulceration of the skin after sclerotherapy can rarely occur. If they occur, the usually heal in 2-3 months and leave a small scar. Deep Vein Thrombosis is a very rare complication following sclerotherapy of larger varicose veins or EVLT. Other potential complications include: 1. Staining or brown pigmentation at the site of treatment. This occurs in about 30% of patients. In most cases the staining resolves but it may take many months. 2. Clots under the skin. These clots may affect the treated veins. These are not dangerous and can be removed through a small incision if necessary. Most of these clots dissolve by themselves. 3. Bruising at the injection sites usually resolves within one to two weeks. 4. Capillary matting is an increase in the number of fine red vessels around the injection site. This problem may disappear on its own, or can be treated by further injections.

I have had varicose veins in my ankles since I was a teenager. I began taking massive doses of vitamin C ' 2000 units a day ' and vitamin E ' 500 units a day, 2 or 3 times a week, about 1966 when I met a girl who said she took 1000 units of vitamin C daily, sometimes more, because her doctor prescribed it to help her varicose veins. Yes, I still have terrible varicose veins in my ankles but they don't hurt and they apparently don't impede my circulation.

Some people claim that varicose veins can be acquired only by women who are obese or potentially overweight. The verdict? Definitely untrue! Everyone can acquire varicose veins, no one can be saved from it. Worse, if it runs in the genes then chances are you will certainly have it.

Who is at risk for varicose veins? There are numerous risk factors for varicose veins. These risks include a family history of varicose veins, obesity, pregnancy, hormonal changes at menopause, work that requires prolonged standing or sitting, and past vein diseases such as phlebitis (inflammation of a superficial vein) or deep venous thrombosis (blood clot in the deeper veins). Women also tend to suffer from varicose veins more than men. In addition, varicose veins can appear after trauma to the area.

If in doubt, or if you have questions, you should consult your physician and, if possible, consult a second physician for a possible different opinion. The author does not bear any responsibility for your decisions nor for the outcome of your actions based upon those decisions.

So, to summarize, during the year I take 2000 units of vitamin C daily, 500 units of vitamin E weekly and 50 mg of selenium and zinc weekly. Since 2001 I have added 50 mg of magnesium and potassium weekly. And, during the Christmas season, beginning in mid-November, I up this to 50 mg of zinc, selenium and magnesium daily, at least 5 days a week, and potassium at least twice weekly.

During the early 1980's I began taking amino acid supplements and quickly learned I am allergic to the amino acid supplements. I developed the same reaction to amino acid supplements as I did to tetracycline and geocyllin. But also during the 1980's, due to a radical change of diet because I was goutish (I took medication to control gout from 1977 thru 1980, for 3 ' years), I began taking zinc and selenium supplements, 50 mg each once a week, along with my vitamin C and E.

Bilberry promotes good circulation and strengthens artery walls, and thus may be an effective treatment for atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaque builds up on the artery walls and blocks the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. Bilberry's anti-inflammatory properties also work to reduce the overall inflammation, including inflammation of the gums, that has been linked with heart disease.

Uses Of Bilberry Bilberry leaf has been used for diabetes, stomach problems, arthritis, blood circulation problems, and heart problems Bilberry contains anthocyanosides, compounds that benefit the circulatory system. Bilberry strengthens blood vessels and connective tissue, builds strong capillaries, improves circulation, and may help to control the formation of blood clots, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids. Additionally, the compounds (anthocyanosides) in Bilberry help eyes adapt to light changes and enhances night vision. Tannin, found in dried Bilberry berries, helps to control diarrhea and related intestinal inflammation (astringent properties). Extract of Bilberry protects the stomach against digestive acids because it stimulates the production of stomach mucus. The leaves of the Bilberry are high in chromium - important to regulate blood sugar levels. This may benefit people who are diabetic or hypoglycemic.

Bilberry contains flavonoids called anthocyanosides, which are found largely in dark-skinned fruits, and act as potent antioxidants in the body. These anthocyanosides are thought to be at least part of the reason that Bilberry is effective in treating such eye disorders such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. In one Italian study, a combination of bilberry extracts and vitamin E stopped the progression of cataracts in 97 percent of the study participants. Bilberries are very rich in natural antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids. As an anti oxidant Bilberry is great in the defense against cell damaging agents called free radicals. Free radicals occur naturally in the body and are most commonly produced from simple oxygen exposure. An other common cause of free radical formation is exposure to carbon monoxide from such things as pollution and cigarette smoke. Anti oxidants remove free radicals from the body and help keep cells healthy. Too many free radicals can cause mutation of cells, which can lead to such things as cancer. Using Bilberry with other anti oxidants such as vitamin C and E and performing regular exercise can help keep your body purged of free radicals and may drastically help reduce the risk of such mutations.

By 1990 I was pretty set in my ways as far as vitamin supplements were concerned. I took 2000 units of vitamin C daily, 500 units of vitamin E weekly, and 50 mg of Zinc and Selenium weekly. I caught a horrible case of the flu in January 1991, as did my wife, and the cough lingered until what seemed like summer, at least into June. For Christmas 1995 I began playing Santa at a Mall. And I got sick, very sick. I was flat on my back in bed for a week and lost my voice totally for 3 full days. After that I just sort of 'squeaked' for the rest of the Christmas season.

The following active constituents have been found in Bilberry: ericolin, arbutin, beta-amyrin, nonacosane, and anthocyanosides. Anthocyanosides are a type of flavonoid which causes the deep blue-red color of many berries. This may produce many of the secondary benefits such as lowering of blood pressure, reduction of clots, reducing varicosities and bruising, reversing poor blood supply, and improving blood supply. Bilberry is used in Europe before surgery to prevent excessive bleeding and hemorrhaging. A recent German medical journal reports bilberry effective in reducing excessive bleeding by 71% (Lietti). Bilberry also thins the blood by inhibiting platelet adhesion (Bottecchia). This combination of actions 1. improving capillary strength, 2. reduction of capillary leakage, and 3. blood thinning results in improved blood flow and may reduce clotting-related health risks.

How Long Will It Take For Me To See Results After Treatment? You will see some immediate results after treatment for varicose and spider veins. The best results will be seen after 3-6 months, when the swelling and bruising has completely resolved.

Even if you still do not notice the appearance of varicose veins in your legs that does not necessarily mean that you can no longer acquire them in time. Varicose veins are a very common condition and are usually a result of several things. It can be triggered by a person's daily activities, genetic inclination, as well as ones health.

Varicose veins or spider veins appear on the legs when the leaflets of the valves found in the legs that are intended to control the valves from flowing backwards are not able to function properly. When the blood flows backward instead of forward unsightly and oftentimes bulky veins appear as well. There are two types of varicose veins: the reticular veins or blue veins and the telangiectasis or spider veins that differ greatly in terms of the size and the location of the veins.

How Does Endovenous Therapy Work? Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) treats the incompetent greater saphenous vein (GSV). The GSV vein courses along the inside part of the leg from the groin to the ankle, and is frequently the underlying cause of varicose veins. The procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance. A laser fiber is passed through a small sheath inserted into the GSV. As the laser is activated, the resulting heat treats the inner lining of the vein causing it to seal. The whole procedure is performed through a tiny skin incision, so there is no post-operative scarring. Pressure is applied to the treated veins using compression hose or other compressive dressings. The recovery time from EVLT is rapid as there are no large surgical incisions or side effects of general anesthesia. Normal activities can be resumed the net day. Vigorous physical activity such as weight lifting and aerobics are not advised during this time, and we advice that patients do not take plane flights for at least one week after the procedure. Why Endovenous Laser Therapy Instead of Other Treatment of Varicose Veins? The benefits of EVLT are the following: 1. A simple procedure 2. Performed under local anesthetic 3. Minimally invasive, so minimal risk of scarring and postoperative infection 4. The procedure takes about one hour and avoids surgery in the operating room with its associated costs 5. Rapid recovery with reduced postoperative pain 6. Normal activities can be resumed almost immediately 7. Excellent clinical and aesthetic results 8. Covered by most insurance companies including Medicare after failure of conservative medical management

As for vitamins C and E, they are the ones your body cannot synthesize so you must give your body a new supply daily. The beauty of them is that what your body does not use is simply sluffed off in urine and the next day you need a new supply. Remember also that vitamins C and E are each very powerful anti-oxidants. For a very few people, however, it is possible to develop vitamin C or E poisoning ' not serious in most cases and dropping your intake cures it quickly. This reaction is extremely rare, not more than 1 instance in 10,000 cases (I have personally only heard of it, and never known a case firsthand, yet I have shared the above with literally thousands of people already).

Side Effects Of Bilberry There are no any serious side effects of Bilberry but it may cause gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, or headaches. Also, people taking drugs or herbs that lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, cause diarrhea, or thin the blood, should take Bilberry with caution???it could increase the effects of these herbs and medications.

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that can occur anywhere a vein is close to skin, but they occur most often in the legs. Faulty valves in the veins and weakened and stretched vein walls cause varicose veins to develop. The laser light heats only the blood and vessel, says Dr. Angle. The heat kills the cells lining the vein and seals the vein closed. During this outpatient...
