Normally these one-way valves work against gravity to direct blood towards the heart. When they become weakened or damaged and don't close properly the blood may start to flow backward - this is known as Venous Insufficiency or Venous Reflux. When veins near the surface of your skin can't handle the excess blood and pressure they engorge and turn into varicose veins. Heredity, obesity, pregnancy, age trauma and standing or sitting for long periods of time all have the potential to cause damage to the one-way valves (and therefore cause varicose veins)

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that can occur anywhere a vein is close to skin, but they occur most often in the legs. Faulty valves in the veins and weakened and stretched vein walls cause varicose veins to develop.

Varicose veins refer to the condition in which the veins of the legs become varicosed, i.e. they appear swollen and bulging and can be made out from the outside. Varicose veins may be dark in color or may retain their original color. They are always painful. In case of prolonged varicose veins, there could be skin peeling and skin ulcers in certain affected parts of the legs.

The laser light heats only the blood and vessel," says Dr. Angle. "The heat kills the cells lining the vein and seals the vein closed." During this outpatient procedure, the skin over the abnormal vein is numbed with a local anesthetic (similar to what a dentist uses) which means the laser does not hurt. The procedure takes about 60 minutes. Persons who have this procedure should be able to return to work the following day. In addition to a short recovery time, other benefits include less cost and no scarring. A noticeable decrease in the size of varicose veins is usually seen in a couple of weeks. The body compensates for the missing vein by rerouting the blood flow to other healthy veins.

There are some Ayurvedic oils available for local application to seek temporary relief. These are Prasarini taila and Chandanabala taila. But care must be taken never to massage any oil directly on the varicose veins, as it would increase pressure on them.

Varicose Vein Causes: They form when valves in the veins that are supposed to direct blood flow towards your heart stop working correctly and, as a result, blood pools in the veins - causing them to enlarge.

Laser surgery is more appealing to some patients because it does not use needles or incisions. Still, when the laser hits the skin, the patient feels a heat sensation that can be quite painful. Cooling helps reduce the pain. Laser treatments last for 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on the severity of the veins, two to five treatments are generally needed to remove spider veins in the legs. Patients can return to normal activity right after treatment, just as with sclerotherapy. For spider veins larger than 3 mm, laser therapy is not very practical.

The laser radiation is introduced in pulse mode and guided along the vein's lumen by slowly and continuously retracting the fiber. Activation of the laser or radio frequency catheter as the device is slowly pulled back along the course of the vein being treated.

5. Intense, pulsed light can be used to selectively damage or destroy abnormal veins including small spider veins.

When Varicose+Veins' target=_blank>varicose veins cause leg symptoms such as pain, heaviness, tiredness, non healing sores, areas of changes in skin color along ankle treatment should be considered. Conservative management with support hose and avoiding prolonged standing is sometimes all that is required, but sometimes this is not enough. Prior to other treatments an ultrasound examination of the leg veins is done. This simple test guides physicians in deciding which therapy, if any, is best.

High blood pressure inside your superficial leg veins causes varicose veins. Other related factors are pregnancy, obesity, menopause, aging, eg injury and abdominal straining. Varicose veins are bulging veins that are larger than spider veins, typically 3 mm or more in diameter. Women are more likely than men to develop varicose veins. Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and twisted. Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, painful veins that have filled with an abnormal collection of blood. Varicose veins can form anywhere in the body, but they are most often located in the legs. In the United States alone, about 19% of men and 36% of women have varicose veins. Varicose veins are distinguished from reticular veins (blue veins) and telangiectasias (spider veins) which also involve valvular insufficiency,[3] by the size and location of the veins. Most varicose veins are relatively benign, but severe varicosities can lead to major complications, due to the poor circulation through the affected limb. Development of carcinoma or sarcoma in longstanding venous ulcers. Varicose veins are more common in women than in men.

3. Newer methods for treating varicose veins, such as Endovenous Laser Treatment. 4. Sclerotherapy injection of a solution (generally sodium chloride) directly into the vein.

Prevention: Unfortunately there are no medically proven ways to completely prevent varicose veins - which means there is no miracle cream or pill you can use that will make them disappear. However, vein specialists say relieving pressure on the veins, as well as promoting muscle strength, helps to keep the blood flowing in the right direction. Exercising, losing weight, elevating your legs when resting, and not crossing them when sitting all have potential benefits. Wearing loose clothing and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing are also thought to be helpful. High-heeled shoes are a no-no as they don't allow the calf muscles to fully contract.

6. Have a wholesome diet rich in proteins and vitamin C. Read more on cause of varicose vein and varicose vein treatment by Ayurveda at http://www.ayushveda.com

Treatment may be requested to improve the appearance. Surgery such as vein stripping and ligation , or sclerotherapy of veins may be recommended. Vein stripping is a very wide procedure, and it is usually reserved for patients who are experiencing a lot of pain or who have skin ulcers. Traditional open surgery, while others prefer newer methods. Newer methods for treating varicose veins, such as Endovenous Laser Treatment, radiofrequency ablation. Sclerotherapy has been used in the treatment of varicose veins. It is often used for telangiectasias (spider veins) and varicose veins that persist or recur after vein stripping. Sclerotherapy can also be performed using microfoam sclerosants under ultrasound guidance to treat larger varicose veins, including the greater and short saphenous veins.

- Fish must be included in the daily diet. (3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Varicose Veins Ayurveda prescribes the Brahmi as the drug of choice for the treatment of varicose veins. Brahmi is used for four continuous weeks to get permanent benefits. It is taken in doses of 10 to 20 milliliters twice a day. Along with brahmi, the Jasad bhasma is also prescribed. This bhasma has three benefits - (i) it is a rich source of the mineral zinc, (ii) it helps in healing and blood clotting through the formation of collagen and (ii) it helps in the concentration of vitamin E in the blood. Other popularly prescribed medicines are Chandraprabha vati, Nagarjunabhra rasa and Punarnavadi guggulu, among others.

4. Have an alternating hot and cold hipbath daily. 5. Apply an oil containing vitamin E as its major component onto the legs. But take care not to rub it too deeply into the legs.

Varicose veins are caused due to excessive pressure caused on the legs or the abdomen. These are brought on by advancing age, obesity, pregnancy, hormonal changes and a host of other factors. Some deficiencies in the diet may cause the loss of elasticity of the veins, which may make them varicose. Also, standing for a long time, engaging in physical activity that puts more strain on the legs, wearing constrictive clothing and total lack of exercise can make the veins varicose.

During laser treatment, the laser is applied to the skin over your spider veins. Laser energy causes your spider veins to coagulate and shrink. Laser therapy is most effective for small and medium size spider veins. Large spider veins respond poorly and are best treated with sclerotherapy. Treatments are associated with mild discomfort, not unlike a small rubber band snapping against skin. Treatments usually do not require sedatives, pain medications, or injections of local anesthetic.

1. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) The indigenous Indian herb, brahmi, is perhaps the best Ayurvedic treatment for varicose veins. It provides the necessary nutrients required for the proper toning of the veins and makes them less tortuous. Brahmi is taken in conjunction with some mineral supplement like Jasad bhasma.

2. Garlic (Allium sativum) Among its many advantageous properties, garlic also has effects in the treatment of varicose veins. Garlic can break down the protein content in the body and distribute it evenly. This increases the protein supply to the lower limb region. Hence, the condition of varicose veins is avoided.

2. Apply a mudpack on the leg in the night and wash it off in the morning. 3. Wearing stockings at night helps, but do not wear tight jeans in the daytime.

- Fresh fruits are very much needed, since vitamin C deficiency is a prime cause of varicose veins. Amalaki and other citrus fruits must be had in good amount.
